Finding Your Inner Chill: A Real Talk on Mental Health Medication

Finding Your Inner Chill

Let’s be honest, mental health isn’t all motivational quotes and calming nature sounds. Sometimes, it feels like wading through a swamp – murky, frustrating, and hard to see the way out.

Medication can be a powerful tool to help navigate those swampy patches, but finding the right one feels like searching for a hidden treasure in the fog.

But you’re not alone in this quest for inner peace.

Emily and the Fog of Depression:

Emily, a brilliant architect, had been battling depression for years. It was like a heavy fog that shrouded her world, stealing her motivation and joy. Therapy helped her understand the root of her struggles, but the dark cloud lingered. With her provider’s guidance, she decided to explore medication.

The first medication caused intense headaches, making it hard to concentrate at work. Disheartened but determined, she talked to her provider, who adjusted the dosage and explored a different option.

Slowly, the fog began to lift.

Colors seemed brighter, and tasks that felt overwhelming became manageable. Medication wasn’t a cure, but it offered Emily the clarity and energy to reclaim her life, one brick (metaphorical and literal) at a time.

Liam and the Symphony of Anxiety:

Liam, a musician with a passion for percussion, struggled with crippling anxiety. Every performance felt like playing live on a tightrope over a pit of hungry crocodiles.  Medication helped, but it wasn’t a perfect melody.

The initial medication caused drowsiness, making his drumming sluggish and imprecise. Working with his doctor, they found a different medication that calmed his nerves without affecting his musicality.

Now, Liam can perform with confidence, letting his rhythm flow freely.

The Power of Patience: Why It Matters (More Than You Think)

Finding the right medication is a journey, not a destination. Some people experience relief quickly, while others may need to try different options or combinations. That’s okay! The key is to be patient with yourself and your body.

Listen to how the medication makes you feel, both physically and emotionally.

Don’t be afraid to keep a journal to track your mood, sleep patterns, and any side effects you experience. This information is gold for your doctor when it comes to finding the perfect fit.

It’s All About You: How Changes Affect Us Differently

Medication can be a game-changer, but it affects everyone differently. Emily, for example, noticed a positive change in her ability to concentrate and feel motivated to tackle her architectural projects.

Liam found that medication helped him manage his anxiety without affecting his musical dexterity.

For others, medication might improve sleep patterns or reduce emotional volatility. The point is, there’s no single “right” outcome. The important thing is to focus on how you feel and celebrate even the small improvements.

Did you manage to get out of bed a little easier today? Did you have a productive conversation at work without feeling overwhelmed? These are all victories worth acknowledging.

The Importance of Support: Beyond Medication

Mental health is a complex ecosystem, and medication is just one piece of the puzzle. Therapy can be a powerful tool for developing coping mechanisms and addressing the root causes of your struggles.

Building a strong support system of friends, family, and loved ones can also make a world of difference. Surround yourself with people who understand, encourage, and believe in you.

Addressing Common Concerns: Let’s Talk Side Effects

Let’s be real, medications can sometimes come with unwanted side effects. They might be dry mouth, fatigue, or changes in appetite. These can be frustrating, but don’t despair! Talk to your doctor. Often, there are ways to manage side effects, or they might lessen as your body adjusts to the medication. Additionally, some medications have a lower risk of side effects than others.

The Long Haul: Maintaining Progress and Addressing Setbacks

Finding the right medication is just the first step. Think of it like planting a beautiful flower garden. You’ve chosen the perfect seeds (medication), but it takes continued care (therapy, healthy habits) to nurture them and ensure they blossom.

Here’s how to navigate the long haul:

  • Be Consistent: Take your medication as prescribed, even if you start to feel better. Skipping doses can disrupt the delicate balance and bring back symptoms.
  • Mind Your Body: Maintain a healthy lifestyle with balanced meals, regular exercise, and enough sleep. These habits support your overall well-being and can enhance the effectiveness of medication.
  • Embrace Mindfulness: Practices like meditation, deep breathing, and spending time in nature can help manage stress and promote emotional balance.
  • Celebrate Milestones: Acknowledge your progress, no matter how small. Did you have a productive week? Did you manage a social event without feeling overwhelmed? These are victories worth celebrating!
  • Expect Setbacks: Life throws curveballs. There will be times when your symptoms return or intensify. Don’t get discouraged! Talk to your doctor. They can adjust your medication or suggest additional strategies to get you back on track.

Remember, you are not alone on this journey. Millions of people around the world use medication to manage mental health conditions. With the right support, patience, and a little self-compassion, you can find  your inner chill and create a life filled with sunshine and blooming flowers (metaphorical and literal, of course!)

Heidi Pollard-Hermann, PMHNP, PMH-C

I’m a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) who supports individuals through life’s most transformative — and often tender — seasons. My clinical work is shaped by over 15 years in maternal-child health nursing and a foundation in anti-trafficking advocacy. These experiences offer me an inclusive, trauma-responsive lens and a deep commitment to caring for the whole person.

My approach is collaborative, warm, and rooted in social justice. I strive to create a therapeutic space that is relational and attuned to the intersections of identity, community, and ecological belonging.

I believe healing often happens through a constellation of care — multiple touchpoints that come together to support wellbeing. Medication can be one of those touchpoints, easing symptoms and supporting greater functioning. I offer evidence-based options for both prescribing and deprescribing psychotropic medications, always aligning with your values and goals.

My practice is guided by deep listening, curiosity, and respect for each person’s lived experience. I take a strengths-based, culturally humble approach and hold strong trust in each person’s capacity for resilience and transformation.
